A Conversation on AAPI Belonging

In the wake of rising discrimination and violence against AAPI and the tragic killing of six AAPI women in Atlanta last week, Climate Collective NYC invites our entire community for an evening of stories and reflection to demonstrate solidarity and allyship with the AAPI community.

This will be an open conversation, and we will hold space for our AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) friends who wish to share their experiences and talk about how we can work together towards belonging, equity, and justice for the AAPI community.

Before joining please take a few minutes to read up on Anti-Asian Racism or follow #stopasianhate on Twitter or on Instagram. The conversation will be recorded.

2.3 paradigm shifts

featured guests + discussion

For this month's Collective, we'd like to foster a conversation about possible foundational changes in the way we think that might improve our relationship to the Earth's ecosystems. Some topics we want to bring to the table are: dualism of humans vs. nature, a rejection of empiricism and an embrace of animism, and our obsession with "growth" or "progress". We will invite our speakers to share their own experiences of a paradigm shift, either in their work or personal lives.

Chester Dols
Director of SVA Visible Futures Lab and trans-

disciplinary designer/artist whose research focuses on gendered mediums, objects & spaces

Tiffany Shin
An artist who works with living organisms, especially microbes, in conjunction with legacies of colonialism and investigations of the body

James Tung
A graduate of SVA, former collaborator with Pentagram's Paula Scher, Design Director, and Educator

Helen Chen, Host
An artist and interaction designer whose current areas of inquiry are materials science, interspecies ecologies, and augmented sensing

Luke Cheng, Host
An artist at New Inc exploring the commonalities between cybernetics, ecology, and social fabrics

2.2 Epmiricism

We've been going over your great ideas behind the scenes and will come together for our next potluck on Wednesday, February 19 from 7-9:30 PM at Huge, Inc., 45 Main Street, Brooklyn in Dumbo.

This month, Timofei Gerasimov and Andrea Cristina Ruiz will kick off by leading a discussion on Empiricism -- gathering evidence and drawing conclusions on big, complex issues. You'll come away with tools for interpreting information on climate change with a critical lens, and -- more importantly -- drawing your own conclusions on the climate crisis and other issues in an age of information overload. From there, we'll continue building out our public art projects to celebrate Earth Day 2020.
